Energy industry insiders are warning that the Biden administration is considering declaring a “climate emergency” with Covid pandemic-like restrictions on public freedoms. There are concerns that such a declaration could grant President Biden sweeping new powers, similar to those exercised during the Covid pandemic. This move has raised fears that the administration could shut down various aspects of society, including communications and infrastructure, to address the perceived climate crisis.
Although President Biden and administration officials have described the current situation as a “climate crisis” and used emergency-like language, no official declaration has been made yet. However, some Democrats and environmental groups have been advocating for such a declaration, and about 60 congressional Democrats have supported legislation called the “Climate Emergency Act of 2021,” which would require the administration to make a climate-related emergency declaration.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also added to the urgency of addressing climate change by using fearmongering language, stating that the era of global warming has ended and the era of global boiling has begun. Some corporate media outlets have even suggested implementing “blackouts” intentionally to tackle climate change.
Energy industry groups view such messaging as part of a propaganda war designed to condition the public to accept drastic measures that may negatively impact their lives. They argue that reliable energy infrastructure is crucial for societal well-being and that imposing restrictions could lead to misery, hardship, and hunger.
Despite the current focus on climate change, data from the Environmental Protection Agency show that recent heat waves are not unprecedented when compared to the 1930s. At that time, the Dust Bowl occurred, causing damage to farmland and displacing farmers.
In the midst of the climate crisis narrative, the energy industry is also grappling with the challenge of transitioning to renewable energy sources while ensuring grid reliability. Policies aimed at de-carbonizing the grid are presenting reliability risks due to potential timing mismatches between resource retirements, load growth, and new generation entry.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the potential for “climate lockdowns” following statements made by World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab’s daughter, Nicole Schwab. She suggested that the authoritarian measures used during the Covid pandemic could serve as a model for future “climate lockdowns” to further the WEF’s “Great Reset” agenda.
As the discussions about climate change and potential emergency measures continue, the energy industry and the public remain vigilant about the implications and consequences of such actions on freedom and daily life.
