According to reports, Mark Meadows, former Chief of Staff to former President Donald Trump, has reportedly decided to cooperate with the Department of Justice and is seeking a plea deal in exchange for immunity.
Prosecutors are preparing to seek an indictment against Trump for alleged violations of Section 793 of the US criminal code, which prohibits the unauthorized disclosure of national defense information. It is speculated that this legal approach could be an attempt by the prosecutors to undermine Trump’s defense, which argues that he exercised his presidential authority to declassify the documents in question. If necessary, Trump may escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
Section 793 states that individuals who possess or have access to documents related to national defense, and intentionally communicate or deliver them to unauthorized persons, or fail to surrender them upon demand, can face up to ten years in prison.
Meadows has reportedly provided testimony before the grand jury and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The report suggests that he will plead guilty to multiple federal charges as part of a prearranged deal that grants him limited immunity in exchange for his cooperation and testimony.
NEW: Prosecutors are ready to ask for grand jurors to vote on a Trump indictment as early as tomorrow, on charges of obstruction of justice and Espionage Act violations. https://t.co/7ZMm60nPmN
