Fernando Villavicencio, a representative of Ecuador’s national assembly, was assaulted following a campaign gathering in the northern urban center of Quito on Wednesday.
As Villavicencio was preparing to enter a vehicle, an individual approached and fired multiple gunshots at his head, with accounts suggesting the detonation of a grenade as well.
Urgently transported to a nearby medical facility, Villavicencio was tragically declared deceased. He was 59 years old.
The upcoming presidential election is slated for August 20.
